2010 Rules

Flights
Each race shall consist of three flights for each entrant. All three flights count towards the score. Up to four entrants may fly in a slot. If there are more than four entrants, they have to be divided into multiple slots, not exceeding four entrants per slot. The slots shall be alternated until all entrants have flown three flights.

Models
Only models of the Witblitz design and specifications may be used. There is no restriction on the number of models an entrant may use in the course of the race, a different one for each flight if he so wishes.

A Witblitz model shall conform to the following specifications:

  • Wing: Rectangular, constant chord planform of 12.2dm² minimum area. The wingspan shall not be less than 610mm and the chord not less than 200mm.
  • Airfoil: Any airfoil section, at least 18mm at maximum thickness.
  • Firewall: 14cm² minimum area (35mm x 40mm is standard).
  • Weight: 320grams minimum.
  • Any material may be used for model construction, i.e. foam, balsa, fibreglass.
  • The motor shall be mounted in front of the firewall and the use of a spinner is not allowed.

The power system shall consist of the following equipment:

  • Brushless 2208 Outrunner motor (22mm diameter x 8mm stator) of 1800 Kv maximum.
  • 3-cell Lithium Polymer battery of any size.
  • 6.5” x 6.5” propeller, i.e. APC Pylon or Graupner Speed Prop.
  • Any Speed Controller.

Course
The course consists of two pylons which are spaced 70m apart and are not less than two metres high. A flag made of highly visible (coloured) material is to be attached to the top portion of each pylon.

The models shall fly an anti-clockwise circuit around the pylons. Although it’s not crucial that the models actually go around the pylons, it must pass the pylons for distance, when viewed perpendicular to the centre line between the 2 pylons.

A Start / Finish line shall be placed at the middle of the course, on both sides of the centre line that runs between the pylons.

A Zero line must be established at least 60m from the centre line so that the models are not allowed to fly over the pilots or marshals. Crossing the Zero line shall result in a disqualification for that heat race.

The pilots shall be positioned just outside the Zero line, close to the Start / Finish line.

A Turn Marshal / Pylon Judge shall be located at each end of the course, on the zero-line, in line with each pylon and perpendicular to the centre line between the pylons, so that they may judge whether a model turns short of a pylon. Pilots have to make sure that they fly past the pylons, to prevent a cut. If a model cuts a pylon, the Turn Marshal shall call out CUT! and the pilot will receive a one point penalty.

Starts
A designated Starter shall be used for timing. Each race shall begin with a flying start. Pilots will have 30 seconds to launch their models. After the 30 seconds, a 10 second countdown will start. The time shall be called out by the Starter: 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-GO! Each pilot must time their crossing of the start-finish line so that the model does not cross the line before the GO call is given. If a model crosses the line before the GO call, the pilot will receive a one point penalty.

At the end of the two-minute race, the Starter shall signal the end of the race by calling STOP. After this moment, no more laps shall be counted by the callers.

Points
Scoring is based on the number of completed laps within a two minute race. Each completed lap counts one point.

The pilot with the most points, wins.

It is the responsibility of each pilot to ensure that his number of laps is given to the CD/Starter after each race.

Fly-off
If the top score for the day is shared by two or more pilots, the CD may call for a fly-off to determine a winner for the day. The fly-off score shall not count towards the year score, but is merely a mechanism to determine a single winner for the day.

The fly-off shall be a single 10-lap race against the clock.

Postals
Pilots in remote areas shall be accomodated by a being allowed to race at their own venues and to “post” their scores to the Racing Co-ordinator, who shall include the Postal Scores into the National Scores. Scores are to be e-mailed as soon as possible after the race day, which shall be on the same day as advertised in the racing calendar. The scoresheet can be downloaded here.

Officials
At minimum, the officials required for a race shall be:

  • A Contest Director (CD)
  • A Starter. This may be the same person as the CD
  • Two Turn Marshals /Pylon Judges
  • A Caller for each pilot
  • Additionally, the CD may elect to use extra Marshals at the Start / Finish line, or wherever he may deem necessary.

Safety
The rules have been designed with safety as first priority. If a pilot is flying in an unsafe manner, the CD / Starter shall ask the offending pilot to land and he will be disqualified from the race and will forfeit any further points for the race.
